What is a Future Learning Space? My take on the subject…

As the name suggests, a Future Learning Space (FLS), is a designed area for students to learn in the future. When the term ‘classroom’ or ‘school’ comes to mind, we tend to paint ourselves a traditional picture of a classroom with desks, students listening and teachers’ teaching. However, if I have learnt anything this semester, it is that this type of ‘classroom’ is out-dated, ineffective and a thing of the past. As a university student and an aspiring teacher, it is important that I continue to learn and build upon my knowledge of what kind of future learning space I am going to adapt. The aims of any teacher in creating a FLS should be one that fosters learning, sets goals to achieve, creates a safe and inclusive environment, encourages diverse learning and teaching techniques and one with access to an abundance of resources and technology. It should promote collaborative and cooperative work among students; as well as ensuring students are participating both in classroom discussion and in their work. Regardless of the country, age, race, gender or ability levels of the students, I believe this kind of FLS should be adapted in every educational setting. A study completed by the Herman Miller Company (2011) states that there are four key constructs that affect student learning. These include; basic human need, teaching, learning and engagement.
